Mirra Andreeva became the first teenager to win the Roland Garros women’s singles title since Iga Swiatek in 2020 after defeating Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska 6-3 6-2 in the final.
The 19-year-old Russian eighth seed ended Chwalinska’s remarkable underdog story on Court Philippe-Chatrier, claiming her maiden Grand Slam crown in just one hour and 22 minutes. Chwalinska, ranked world number 114 and a 500-1 outsider at the start of the tournament, had captivated fans with her fairytale run.
Andreeva, the youngest winner at Roland Garros since Monica Seles in 1992, dropped to the clay in celebration before climbing into the stands to embrace her coach, former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez.
“I’ve been watching Roland Garros since I was very young and it has always been a dream to win this trophy,” Andreeva said after the match.
The final began in dramatic fashion, with the first four games all going against serve amid swirling winds and evident nerves. Chwalinska drew huge cheers from a capacity 15,000-strong crowd — many of them Polish supporters — when she held serve first.
However, Andreeva quickly settled and showcased her growing maturity, winning the next nine games in a row to seize control at 6-3 5-0. Although she faltered once while trying to serve out the match, the Russian stayed composed and sealed victory on Chwalinska’s serve with a clinical backhand winner.
